About Boulder River Wilderness Study Area

The Boulder River Wilderness Study Area is located within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in southwest Montana. Spanning over 20,000 acres, this WSA features a diverse landscape of steep forested slopes, rocky ridges, and the wild Boulder River, known for its clear waters and trout habitat. The area is part of the northern Rockies ecosystem, supporting dense stands of lodgepole pine, Douglas fir, and spruce, as well as habitats for elk, deer, black bear, and mountain lions. Historically, the region was utilized by Native American tribes and later by miners and settlers, though it remains largely untouched by modern development. Outdoor recreation is centered on hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and wildlife viewing, with few established trails lending a true backcountry experience. Notable landmarks include rugged peaks and secluded river valleys. Its remote setting, limited access, and designation as a Wilderness Study Area emphasize its preservation until a final congressional decision determines permanent wilderness status. As such, the Boulder River WSA provides opportunities for solitude and exploration far from heavily trafficked sites, appealing to adventurous visitors seeking unspoiled natural settings in the Northern Rockies.
